O Muslims, rejoice! Rejoice in the good news of success, forgiveness, blessings, contentment and acceptance from Allah, on account of your fulfilling the obligation of fasting Ramadan, your bringing its nights to life, paying the Zakat al-Fitr and attending the Salat al-Eid. For Allah says in His Noble Book, the translation of which is, “The one who has purified himself (tazakka), invoked the Name of his Lord and prayed, will have success.” This ayah has been interpreted by many of the mufassirin as referring to the payment of the zakat ul-Fitr and the establishment of the Eid prayer.

And He, the exalted, says:

the translation of which is, “You should complete the number of days and proclaim Allah’s greatness for the guidance He has given you so that hopefully you will be thankful.”

The tafseer of this ayah is that the proclaiming of Allah’s greatness by uttering the takbeer is at the end of Ramadan, on the day of ‘Eid, in gratitude for His blessings and favour bestowed upon us, His guiding us and enabling us to fulfil what He has prescribed for us.

We have gathered together to celebrate the ‘Eid al-Fitr, to rejoice in our having successfully completed one of the greatest acts of obedience to our Lord, fasting the month of Ramadan. And for that we must give heartfelt thanks, in acknowledgment of Allah’s vast mercy and generosity. Today is a day Allah has singled out – it is the day He bestows upon the believers His reward for fasting the month of Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“On the day of the Eid ul-Fitr, the angels come down to the earth, stand at the head of the various streets and alleyways, and call out in a voice that all of creation are able to hear except for mankind and the jinn, ‘O umma of Muhammad, go out to a Generous Lord who gives an ample reward and forgives great wrong actions.’ Then, when the people come to their Musalla, Allah says to the angels, ‘My angels, what is the recompense of the paid worker who completes his work?’ They reply, ‘Our God and our Master will give him his payment in full.’ Whereupon Allah says, ‘I bear witness that I have made their reward for the fasting and praying they have done be my rida (contentment with them) and My Forgiveness. So go forth forgiven.’”

the translation of which is: “Say: ‘It is the favour of Allah and His mercy that should be the cause of their rejoicing. That is better than anything they accumulate.’”

Muslims, rejoice in Allah’s blessings upon you. He says in his Book:

the meaning of which is : ‘And if you try to enumerate Allah’s blessings, you will not be able to count them.’

Allah’s blessings are countless, and today some of the greatest ones are most apparent, so take delight in them – enjoy your good food and drink, your beautiful clothes, your sweet-smelling perfumes and the company of loved ones. And display them openly out of thanks to your Lord. He says:

the translation of which is, “And as for the blessing of your Lord, speak out!”

The Messenger of Allah may Allah bless him and grant him peace said:

‘Allah loves to see the mark of His blessing on His slave.’

So honour Allah’s generosity and celebrate it. And remember that Allah has made the believers brothers, in the the most profound sense; and this is an existential reality which we must cherish and nurture and not understand or take superficially. This bond is our support and respite in a time when all ties have been shuttered and people have been individualised, enslaved and deprived of their communal power and economic and transactional freedom.

Allah says:

“You became brothers by His blessing.”

And He says:

The translation of which is, “The muminun / the believers are brothers.”

And He also says, may He be exalted:

“He is the One Who joined their hearts together”

So take the opportunity of this blessed day to renew and strengthen the bond amongst you. Be generous to each other, have concern for each other, help each other, honour each other, give each other good counsel, forgive each other and put things right between you where there are grievances.

Oh Allah, we ask You to accept our fast and our prayer and grant us Your Forgiveness. We ask You to give us success and fulfill our highest aspirations. We ask that He make this day a time of great joy for the Muslim Umma, especially those who are being downtrodden and oppressed throughout the Muslim world. We ask that You bless us on this blessed day and grant us victory over Your enemies.
