Muslims, today we have gathered together to celebrate the ‘id al-Adha. Eid al-Adha is meant to be a recognition of the material and spiritual favors of Allah to His creation, manifested in the slaughtering done by all able Muslims, following the sunna (way) of the Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). For that, we must give heartfelt thanks, for the truth of the matter is that there is no greater ni’ma than Islam and no greater n’ima than being given the strength and capacity to fulfil what our Lord has commanded us to do and the Sunna of the best of creation SAWS. Allah says:

The translation of which is, “I only created jinn and man to worship Me.“ Thus, we only truly embrace our humanity and only truly fulfil our potential as human beings by worshipping our Lord – that is our fitra and that is what brings us the most contentment and happiness.

Muslims, today, is about celebrating and rejoicing – it is about enjoying the blessings of Allah and taking delight in them. Allah’s blessings to us are countless – good company, fine clothing, good food, good drink – but of all good blessings there is one that far surpasses all the others and is, on its own, enough for us. And that is Islam- the Deen of Allah. As we say every day when we recite the wird:

“Praise be to Allah for the blessing of Islam, it is enough of a blessing.”

Of all the many creatures of Allah, of all the children of Adam who have lived on this planet since the beginning of time, of all the billions of human beings scattered throughout the earth, Allah has chosen us, each one of us seated here in this mosque, for His favour. Allah says:

The translation of which is: “Say: ‘It is the favour of Allah and His mercy that should be the cause of their rejoicing. That is better than anything they accumulate.’”

The greatest cause for rejoice, the greatest reason to celebrate, is us being guided to Islam and being made part of the Umma of Muhammad.

Our two Eids are directly linked to two of the great pillars upon which Islam is built – the first coming at the end of the fast of Ramadan and the second coming at the end of hajj in the month of Dhul Hijja. So the Eids are put in place to enable us to show our joy and gratitude to our Lord for having been given the strength and opportunity to take part in and complete those great pillars of the Deen.

It is this great Deen what distinguishes us from the rest of people who remain in ignorance and misguidance.

This Deen that Allah completed for us during the farewell hajj of the Messenger of Allah, when Allah revealed the following ayat to the Prophet:

the translation of which is: “Today I have perfected your Deen for you and completed My blessing upon you and I am pleased with Islam as a Deen for you.”

Unlike the kuffar, we do not have to wander in confusion and doubt, unsure of our place in existence and unsure of what we should do next. We have a complete and perfected blueprint for living our lives in a way that is pleasing to our Lord, so how can we not be happy, pleased and rejoice at it?

The second thing mentioned in the aya we mentioned earlier and that should be a cause of our rejoicing is Allah’s mercy, which is referred to the Messenger of Allah SAWS, being the proof of It the words of Allah, addressing the Prophet:

The translation of which is: “We have not sent you except as a mercy to all the worlds.”

We are immensely privileged, Muslims, to be part of the Umma of Muhammad, the pinnacle of creation, the first of the Prophets to be created and the last to be sent and the accepted intercessor by means of whose intercession the gates of the Garden will be opened for the believers to enter. We are immensely privileged to be part of the best community the world has ever seen. Allah says in surat Ali Imran:

The translation of which is: “You are the best community ever to be produced before mankind. You enjoin the right, forbid the wrong and have iman in Allah.”

Being part of the community of Muhammad is such a great honour that Messengers of the past, including Adam and Musa, wished that they could have been part of his Umma.

Eid al-Adhha is a manifestation of total submission to the command of Allah. It is the submission of one’s mind, wealth, and body to the Command and Pleasure of Allah. On this day, Muslims all over the world thank Allah for the gift bestowed on them.

The lessons derived from the story when Prophet Ibrahim was ordered by Allah to slaughter his son, are many. But the main one is his total submission to the Divine Command, since he was about to slaughter is very own son, until at the last moment Allah sent an animal to be slaughtered instead.

On this day, Muslims who are able slaughter an animal, They eat its meat and distribute it among to family, friends and the poor.

Muslims are encouraged to wear their best clothes, give gifts (especially to children) and celebrate with family, friends, and neighbors. As a recognition of the blessings of Allah.

On Eid day, it is especially recommended to give in charity and to remember those brothers and sisters of us who are in need.

In this and other ways, Muslims seek to join between worldly and spiritual celebration, for it is said, “True rejoicing is not (merely) in wearing new clothes, but in becoming true in one’s dhikr and worship of Allah.”

The Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace) said,

“For every people there is a feast and this is our feast.”

[Reported by Bukhari in his Sahih]

Muslims, despite all of our differences and all of the individual ways of being, we ARE a single nation, we ARE brothers and sisters. Allah says:

The translation of which is, “This nation of yours is one nation and I am your Lord, so worship Me.” And Allah says:

The translation of which is, “The muminun / the believers are brothers.”

And we must carry that brotherhood, togetherness and love for one another with us throughout the rest of the day and indeed throughout the rest of the year. If there are friends from whom you have become estranged, then visit them. If there are family members with whom you are angry, forgive them and re-establish ties. And meet everyone with a smile and kind words. Abdallah ibn Umar said,

“Birr (goodness) is a simple matter – it is simply having a smiling face and speaking kind and gentle words.”

So, take delight in the blessings Allah has given you – your food and drink, your clothes, your sweet-smelling perfumes and the company of loved ones. And display them openly out of thanks to your Lord.

“And as for the blessing of your Lord, speak out!”

Wear your best clothes, eat your best food and wear your best perfume. Enjoy today for it is our Eid.

Oh Allah, we ask You to accept our sacrifice and our prayer and grant us Your Forgiveness. We ask You to give us success in keeping our himma high and putting into practice what You have commanded us, and to protect our hearts from love of this world and its traps and attractions. We ask You to make the Garden, and not the Blazing Fire, our refuge.

We ask you to bless us on this blessed day, and fill our hearts with joy and delight. And make it the means for the re-unification of the Muslim Umma.
