Imam-Khatib • Attorney • Academic • Author
“Arabic grammar in Qur’anic discourse does not merely convey meaning; it governs interpretation.”
Imam-Khatib of the Jumu’a Mosque
Shaykh Isma-eel Isaacs is a Cape Town-based Islamic scholar, legal practitioner, academic, and published author whose work bridges classical Islamic learning, modern Arabic and legal scholarship, and professional legal practice. He serves as Imam-Khatib of the Jumu’a Mosque of Cape Town, while also practising as an attorney and contributing to university teaching, curriculum development, and research in Arabic, translation, and Islamic legal discourse.
His career is marked by a rare integration of the minbar, the courtroom, and the classroom — grounded in traditional Islamic scholarship and reinforced by rigorous academic training. In the Jumu’a Mosque, he leads the weekly khutbah, guides the jama’at through the Islamic year, and teaches within the mosque’s growing educational programmes.
His khutbahs address contemporary ethical, social, and spiritual questions with depth and precision, drawing on the full breadth of the Islamic scholarly tradition. A selection of his khutbahs is available in the Khutbah Archive.

Islamic Scholarship & Formation
Damascus, Syria — Abu Noor Institute
Classical Islamic Studies
Shaykh Isma-eel completed five years of intensive study in Islamic Sciences at the Abu Noor Institute in Damascus, Syria — one of the world’s most respected centres for traditional Sunni learning. His studies encompassed the full breadth of the classical Islamic curriculum: tafsir, fiqh, hadith, usul al-fiqh, and Arabic grammar.
Scholarly Mentorship
He studied under Shaykh Professor Muhammad Said Ramadan al-Buti (1929–2013) — one of the most influential Sunni scholars of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and a towering authority in Islamic jurisprudence, theology, and Qur’anic studies. Al-Buti’s emphasis on the inseparability of rational enquiry and revealed tradition shaped Shaykh Isma-eel’s own scholarly approach.
Qur’anic Mastery
A Hafidh of the Qur’an, having completed his memorisation in Cape Town, South Africa. His formation encompasses tafsir, fiqh, and the grammar-based disciplines that govern Qur’anic interpretation — a rigour reflected in both his scholarly writing and his weekly khutbahs.
