Sunday Madrassah

The Jumu’a Mosque of Cape Town runs a free Sunday Madrassah for Muslim children and adults in the community. Rooted in the classical Islamic sciences and taught with care and dedication, the Madrassah equips students with knowledge, practice, and love for their deen — in a warm and welcoming environment at the heart of the Bo-Kaap.

Curriculum

The Madrassah curriculum covers the foundational sciences of Islam, taught in an age-appropriate and engaging manner:

Age Groups & Classes

Children’s Class — Ages 7 to 15

The main class welcomes children between the ages of 7 and 15. Students engage with the full curriculum of Recitation, Fiqh, Aqeedah, and Seerah in a structured and encouraging environment, guided by a committed teaching team.

Adult Classes

Alongside the children’s class, the Madrassah offers separate adult learning for men and women, allowing the community to continue deepening their Islamic knowledge:

  • Young Men’s Class — taught by Shaykh Abdullah Ahmat
  • Women’s Class — taught by Muallimah Asma Ahmat

Ustadh Muhammad Makwetu
Lead Teacher
Ustadh Muhammad leads the children’s curriculum with both academic rigour and pastoral warmth. He is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of Cape Town Muslims in their foundational Islamic sciences.
Muallimah Asma Ahmat
Teacher & Women’s Adult Class
Muallimah Asma teaches in the children’s class and leads the Women’s Adult Class, providing a nurturing and structured space for women in the community to continue their Islamic learning.
Daleel Isaacs
Assistant Teacher
Daleel supports the teaching team, working closely with students to reinforce lessons and provide individual attention where needed.
Shaykh Abdullah Ahmat
Young Men’s Adult Class
Shaykh Abdullah leads the Young Men’s Adult Class, offering deeper engagement with the Islamic sciences for adult students seeking to continue or renew their learning.

Enrolment

The Madrassah is open to all Muslim children and adults in the community. There are no fees — the programme is made possible through the generosity of patrons of the Jumu’a Mosque. To register a child or enquire about the adult classes, use the registration form or reach out to us directly.
