Ibn Abbas reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Allah took the covenant from the loins of Adam at Na’man which is Arafah, bringing forth from his backbone every seed that he would sow. He scattered them before him and then He spoke to them as they stood before Him, saying: Am I not your Lord? They said: Of course, we bear witness. So that we cannot say on the Day of Resurrection: We were unaware of this.” (Al-A’raf:172)

This covenant is the essence of our deen and purpose in life, reminding us that our existence is rooted in a divine purpose. Each one of us has testified to the oneness of Allah, acknowledging Him as our Creator, Sustainer, and Master. This testimony is embedded deep within our fitrah, it is our natural disposition, highlighting that our ultimate goal is to return to Allah.

The significance is further emphasized in the Qur’an:

“This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” (Al-Ma’idah: 3). This revelation was made on the Day of Arafah, a day of immense importance in Islam. It is a day of mercy and forgiveness when Allah’s blessings are abundant. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is reported to have said,

“There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafah.” (Muslim). On this significant day, the Prophet (ﷺ) delivered a powerful sermon on the plains of Arafah, addressing over a hundred thousand companions with a timeless message that resonates to this day. A message that tells us exactly how to live our testimony and uphold our covenant. He ﷺ began by affirming the sanctity of life, property, and honour, saying:

“O people, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust.” This reminder underscores the importance of justice, respect, and the protection of the dignity of each other, calling upon us to uphold these values in our daily interactions. He ﷺ then emphasized the unity of the Muslim Ummah, declaring:

“All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; a white has no superiority over a black, nor does a black have any superiority over a white; none have superiority over another except by piety and good action.” In these words, the Prophet (ﷺ) abolished divisions of race, ethnicity, and social status, highlighting that our worth in the sight of Allah is determined by our taqwa and righteous deeds. This message of equality and brotherhood is a cornerstone of our deen. The Prophet (ﷺ) also reminded us of the rights of women, stating:

“O people, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Treat them with kindness and love, for they are your partners and committed helpers.” This emphasis on mutual respect and kindness within the family unit underscores the importance of upholding the dignity and rights of women, calling for loving and compassionate relationships.

In his concluding remarks, the Prophet (ﷺ) delivered a powerful reminder of our duty to follow the Quran and his Sunnah, saying:

“I leave behind me two things: the Quran and my Sunnah, and if you follow these, you will never go astray.” This timeless guidance serves as a beacon, reminding us to hold fast to the divine revelations and the prophetic teachings. Through adherence to the Qur’an and the Sunnah, we can navigate life’s challenges and remain steadfast on the straight path.

Thus, the Day of Arafah not only signifies the perfection of our religion but also echoes the Prophet’s final sermon, reminding us of our covenant with Allah, the sanctity of life, unity, justice, equality, and the importance of adhering to the Qur’an and Sunnah. It is a day that encapsulates the core principles of Islam, reaffirming our commitment to Allah and His Messenger in every aspect of our lives.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, “Al-Hajj is Arafah.” By this, he meant that the essence of Hajj is contained within the moments of Arafah. Similarly, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, الدعاء هو العبادة meaning supplication is worship, and الندم توبة meaning regret is repentance. The core of true repentance is sincere regret, and from this stems all other beneficial actions. Likewise, Arafah is the heart of Hajj and holds significance for all Muslims around the world.

The Prophet (ﷺ) also said, “There is no day on which Allah sets free more souls from the Fire than on the Day of Arafah.” On this day, Allah draws near to the earth and, exhibiting His pride, remarks to the angels, “What do these servants of mine desire so that I may grant it to them?” Imagine the scene at Arafah: millions of people making du’a at the same time, each in their own language, with sincere requests, and Allah honouring and answering each one of them.

This blessing extends to people all over the world, to you and I, who on this day also strive to partake in the blessings of Arafah, calling upon Allah for forgiveness, seeking His pleasure and bounty. Allah responds to every earnest and heartfelt supplication, whether it is made in Arafah or elsewhere, in every language, and from every heart.

Undoubtedly those who are in Arafah have combined the virtue of the place with the virtue of the time but the benefits of Hajj and Arafah reach the entire Ummah. Therefore, I urge you to pray for yourselves, your families, and your Ummah around the world. Let the blessings of this day flow. Remember, the Muslim who fasts in this virtuous time on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah known as the Day of Arafah

Will be forgiven his sins of the past year and the next, praying on this day is important (الصلاة عماد الدين), as it is a pillar of the deen;

And increase in saying (La ilaha illallah), (Allahu Akbar), and (Alhamdulillah), making du’a on this day is important, the best du’a is Arafah we have been advised that the best to say is:

“None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, Alone, without partner, to Him belongs all that exists, and to Him belongs the Praise, and He is powerful over all things.” and avoiding sins that can diminish the blessings of this day is crucial (اتقوا المحارم تكن أعبد الناس) as the one who avoids haram is the best of slaves.

The Prophet (ﷺ) also informed us that on this day, Shaytan is more humiliated and in greater despair than on any other day. Why? Because he sees the people he has worked tirelessly to mislead and deceive turning back to their Merciful Lord, calling upon Him, and being forgiven for all their sins. Shaytan’s efforts are rendered futile in moments as droves of people are forgiven, their good standing restored and His mercy showering down upon them.

Ya IbadAllah, seize the opportunity to draw closer to Allah. Turn to Him sincerely, humbly make abundant du’a, and seek His mercy and forgiveness, knowing full well that none except Allah can forgive the repercussions of our actions. May Allah accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and grant us the strength to uphold the values of our deen.
