Dear brothers and sisters, we begin with the powerful reminder from Allah in Surah At-Tawbah: Say, [O Muhammad], “If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, business wherein you fear decline, and property with which you are pleased are more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger and jihad in His cause, then wait until Allah executes His command. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.” (9:24)
This verse is a stern warning. It reminds us that our love for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ must surpass all worldly attachments—family, wealth, and comfort. This love is not just a matter of affection; it is an essential part of our Deen. Without it, our connection to Islam remains incomplete. As the Prophet ﷺ himself said:
“None of you will believe until I am more beloved to him than his children, his father, and all people.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
This profound love for the Prophet ﷺ is not a mere sentiment; it is the essence of true eman. The strength of our love for him reflects the strength of our eman, and the perfection of this love leads to the perfection of our eman.
Qadi Iyad, in his masterpiece Kitab al-Shifa, quotes the companion Sahl ibn Sa’d, who said, “Whoever does not believe that the Prophet ﷺ is their master in all states and under all circumstances has not truly tasted the sweetness of his Sunnah.” This sweetness is the result of deep, unshakable love for him, which is the foundation upon which our relationship with Allahﷻ and our religion is built.
The blessings that come with loving the Prophet ﷺ are immeasurable. This love brings us closer to Allah, protecting us from His anger and filling our lives with light and goodness. As the scholars and the righteous have explained, those who truly love the Prophet ﷺ are granted divine protection, and their love becomes a source of illumination in both this life and the Hereafter.
One of the greatest honours bestowed upon those who love the Prophet ﷺ is the promise of being with him in the Hereafter. As narrated by Sayyiduna Anas (RA), a man asked the Prophet ﷺ, “When is the Last Hour?” The Prophet ﷺ responded, وَمَاذَا أَعْدَدْتَ لَهَا “What have you prepared for it?” The man replied, “Nothing, except that I love Allah and His Messenger.” The Prophet ﷺ then said,
“You will be with the one you love.” (Bukhari)
Anas (RA) commented, “There was no moment that made us happier than when the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘You will be with the one you love.'” Anas (RA) then added, “I love the Prophet, Abu Bakr, and ‘Umar, and I hope to be with them because of my love for them, even if my deeds are not like theirs.” What a powerful promise for those who love the Prophet ﷺ—just by virtue of that love, they can hope to be with him in Jannah.
Ya IbadaAllah, the love that the Sahabah had for the Prophet ﷺ was unparalleled. Abu Bakr (RA) once said, “By the One who sent you with the truth, I would be happier if Abu Talib were to become Muslim than my own father, Abu Quhayfa.” Why? Because the Islam of Abu Talib would have pleased the Prophet ﷺ more. Similarly, ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) told the Prophet’s uncle al-‘Abbas, “Your becoming Muslim is dearer to me than my own father’s Islam because it would delight the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
These examples demonstrate that for the Sahabah, the Prophet’s happiness and well-being took precedence over their own families and loved ones. Their hearts were entirely consumed by devotion and love.
After the Battle of Uhud, a woman from the Ansar lost her father, brother, and husband. Yet when she was told about their deaths, her only question was, “What has happened to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” When they assured her that the Prophet ﷺ was safe, she said, “Every affliction is as nothing now that you are safe.” This is the epitome of love and loyalty to the Prophet ﷺ—nothing mattered as long as he was unharmed.
We may wonder: how can we, living in a time far removed from the Prophet ﷺ, match this level of love? Yet, the Prophet ﷺ said, “Those in my community who have the strongest love for me are the people who will come after me. Some of them would give their families and wealth just to have seen me.” Even without having seen him, we can cultivate a deep love for the Prophet ﷺ through our actions and our hearts.
So, how do we know if this love for the Prophet ﷺ has truly taken root in our hearts? A true lover of the Prophet ﷺ strives to follow his Sunnah, embody his character, and prioritize his teachings over personal desires. Such a person aligns their anger and joy with what pleases Allah, preferring others even when they are in need, as the Qur’an describes:
“They prefer others to themselves, even if they are in difficult straits.” (59:9)
A heart filled with love for the Prophet ﷺ is one that holds no grudges, seeks no revenge, and is quick to forgive. It is a heart that trembles with awe at the mention of his name, a heart that yearns to meet him in the Hereafter. Such a person is devoted to the Prophet’s family and companions, holding deep respect for them and love for all who supported and followed him.
This love also manifests in a sincere attachment to the Qur’an, striving to recite, understand, and live by it, as the Prophet ﷺ was the living embodiment of its teachings. And above all, they are concerned for the well-being of the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ.
Many speak of love—love for Allah, love for the Prophet ﷺ—but often, their words differ, and their understandings vary. Some perceive love as a mere emotion, while others seek its outward signs.
Love, as many scholars have expressed, is not confined to one form. Some say, “Love is the constant remembrance of the beloved,” while others describe it as “preferring the beloved over all else” or “yearning for the beloved.” But most of these definitions capture the fruits of love, not its essence.
So, what is the reality of love? Love is the deep inclination of the heart towards that which is beautiful, harmonious, or beneficial. In our everyday lives, we experience love for three primary reasons:
Love for Beauty and Perfection: Our hearts naturally gravitate toward what is beautiful and pleasing to the senses—whether it is a stunning view or a melodious sound. But beyond these external beauties, there is a more profound love—a love for noble qualities, like wisdom, righteousness, and integrity. This is why we love the righteous, the scholars, and the people of goodness, for their inner beauty and upright character. Our hearts are also inclined to love those who benefit us. We love those who show us kindness, who protect us, and who care for us, even if they help us only once or twice.
Reflect on these causes of love in relation to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and you will see that they apply to him in the most sublime and perfect way.
The beauty of the Prophet ﷺ as narrated by ‘Ali (RA) captures it, “Whoever saw him suddenly was filled with awe. Whoever mixed with him loved him.”
But more captivating than his outward beauty was the perfection of his inner character. The Prophet ﷺ was the living embodiment of the Qur’an, as Aisha (RA) described. His mercy, patience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to his mission made him beloved by all who knew him. As Allah tells us in the Qur’an:
“There has come to you a Messenger from among yourselves; you are so precious to him that it grieves him that you should suffer; he eagerly desires the best for you, and to the believers, he is constantly compassionate and merciful.” (9:128)
The Prophet ﷺ was sent to save us from the torment of Hellfire and led us toward eternal bliss in Jannah. What greater blessing could there be than this? What favour could be more profound than being rescued from destruction and guided to everlasting life?
Reflect for a moment: If a man loves someone who shows him kindness once or twice in this world, how much more should we love the one who was sent to save us from eternal destruction and lead us to everlasting bliss? If we love those who provide us with temporary benefit in this dunya, how much more deserving is the one who brings us infinite benefit in the akhirah?
The Prophet ﷺ is more deserving of our love than anyone else. He is the means by which we know Allah. He is the one who will intercede for us on the Day of Judgment. He is the one who brought us the Qur’an and taught us the way to our Lord.
O Allah, fill our hearts with a profound love for Your Messenger ﷺ. Inspire us to follow his Sunnah and embody his noble character, placing Your guidance above all. May our love for the Prophet illuminate our lives and guide our paths, uniting us with him in the Hereafter.
