“O you who have believed, believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down upon His Messenger and the Book which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, and the Last Day has certainly gone far astray.” (An-Nisa: 136)
At first glance, one might wonder: why does Allah command those who already believe to believe again? Isn’t belief already established? My dear brothers and sisters, this call is a profound reminder that Eman is not static; it requires constant renewal, nurturing, and growth. It is a journey from mere acknowledgment to unwavering conviction and transformative action.
This verse speaks to two levels of belief:
- Initial Belief (Eman al-Iqrar):
This is the acknowledgment of Allah’s truth—the acceptance that Islam is the right path and a commitment to join the ranks of the believers.
- Complete Faith (Eman al-Tasdiq):
This is deeper. It is belief that permeates the heart, governs actions, shapes morals, and aligns every aspect of a person’s life with the teachings of Islam. It transforms how one thinks, feels, and acts, making Eman a living force in the believer’s life.
The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ understood this distinction well. Abdullah ibn Salam, Asad, and Usaid, the sons of Ka‘b, Tha‘labah ibn Qays, Salam the nephew of Abdullah ibn Salam, Salamah his brother’s son, and Yamin — once said, “O Messenger of Allah, we believe in you, in your Book, in Musa, the Torah, and Uzair. But we disbelieve in anything other than that among the Books.” The Prophet ﷺ responded, “Believe in Allah, His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ, His Book, the Qur’an, and every book that came before it.” Then, this verse was revealed. They then immediately responded, “O Messenger of Allah, we believe in everything, and we do not differentiate between any of them, as the Jews and Christians have done.”
My dear brothers and sisters, Eman is not a partial commitment. It is not 90% or 95%, not even 99%. It is 100% commitment, acceptance, and submission to all that Allah has revealed. To take some of it while neglecting the rest is akin to taking none of it. We cannot pick and choose parts based on convenience or our own desires. Allah warns us about such people in surah hajj:
“And among the people is he who worships Allah on an edge. If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by trial, he turns on his face [to disbelief]. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss.” (22:11)
This verse describes the one who practices Eman conditionally, depending on ease and benefit. True Eman, however, stands firm in both prosperity and adversity, unwavering in its trust in Allah.
Allah’s command to the believers to “believe” is a call to self-reflection. Ask yourself: “Is my Eman complete, or have I allowed doubts, distractions and desires to weaken it?” If we are honest, we may find areas where our Eman is lacking or where we have not given due importance to certain aspects of our deen. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Eman wears out in the heart as clothes wear out, so ask Allah to renew the Eman in your hearts.” (Al-Hakim)
“Eman increases and decreases.” The more a person engages in acts of goodness and ponders Allah’s signs, the stronger their Eman becomes. Alternatively, Neglecting worship and being distant from Allah causes one’s connection to Him to weaken, although the commitment to Eman remains intact. This is affirmed by the Ayah in surah al-Anfal where Allah states:
“…and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in Eman.” (Al-Anfal: 2)
Allah describes al-Qur’an as:
“A healing for what is in the hearts.” (Yunus: 57)
And The Prophet ﷺ would frequently say:
“O Allah, Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your Deen.”
And the prophet ﷺ advised us to surround ourselves with those who remind us of Allah:
“A person follows the religion of his close friend, so be mindful of whom you befriend.” (Tirmidhi)
Eman in Islam is not merely lipservice or just a belief in the heart; it is a combination of the heart’s affirmation of the truth that manifests in a verbal acknowledgment and righteous actions of the limbs. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Eman has seventy-odd branches, the highest of which is the declaration ‘There is no god except Allah,’ and the lowest of which is removing harm from the road. And modesty is a branch of Eman.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
True Eman is a gift that manifests in our words, actions, and character.
Ya IbadaAllah, Allah, the Exalted, says in His Glorious Book:
The bedouins say, “We have believed.” Say, “You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], ‘We have submitted,’ for Eman has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Surah Al-Hujurat: 14)
In this verse, Allah distinguishes between Islam—the outward submission to His commands—and Eman—the deep-rooted, heartfelt conviction and certainty in Allah. Submission with the tongue is not sufficient if the heart remains untouched. Islam is the outward entry point into the Deen, but true faith, Eman, requires a transformation of the heart and soul.
The verse addresses a particular group of desert Arabs who outwardly professed Islam but had not allowed Eman to take root in their hearts. They embraced Islam not out of sincere belief, but due to worldly motives—seeking security and material gain. Their claims of Eman were shallow, exposed by their demands for rewards and recognition as if they had done a favour to the Prophet ﷺ and the Muslims by accepting Islam.
Allah reminds them—and us—that mere verbal declaration is not enough. True Eman requires sincerity, humility, and obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. This is a powerful lesson for all of us: we must not reduce our Deen to a superficial display. Eman is not about appearances or mere affiliation; it is about unwavering belief, heartfelt submission, and consistent action.
Some may misunderstand this verse to mean that Islam and Eman are entirely separate or contradictory. However, in the Qur’anic usage, Islam encompasses both Islam and Eman and vice versa. It is the comprehensive way of life revealed by Allah, consisting of belief in the heart and obedience in action. Allah says:
“Indeed, the only way of life acceptable to Allah is Islam.” (3: 19)
“And whoever seeks a way other than submission to Allah (Islam), it will never be accepted from him.” (3: 85)
Thus, while outward submission may mark the beginning of one’s journey to Allah, it is sincere Eman that elevates a person in the sight of Allah. A Muslim should continuously strive to move from external compliance to a deep, internal conviction that permeates every aspect of life.
We ask Allah to grant us perfect Eman, to make us among His sincere servants, to forgive our sins, and to admit us to His gardens by His mercy. Indeed, He is the One who is capable of that.
