“When it is said to them, ‘Do not cause corruption in the land,’ they say, ‘We are only putting things right,”

Over the next three weeks we will unpack this verse of the Qur’an in order to extrapolate three concepts that are inextricably linked in order to help us think about and understand global events from an Islamic paradigm or as they exist in reality. Today, we will discuss the first concept in detail and indirectly touch on the others. The importance of staying vigilant against all forms of corruption in our daily lives cannot be understated, and a big part of that vigilance is understanding the hypocrite.

What is The Nature of Hypocrisy:

Dear brothers and sisters, Allah (SWT) describes the hypocrite as one who believes he is deceiving Allah and the believers. However, the crux of hypocrisy lies in the fact that the hypocrite has never believed. Allah says in the Qur’an:

“And of the people are some who say, ‘We believe in Allah and the Last Day,’ but they are not believers.” (2:8)

This verse clearly indicates that they claim Eman in Allah and the Last Day, yet they are not truly believers. The use of the phrase “وَمَا هُم بِمُؤۡمِنِينَ” with the “ba” litab’eed, emphasizes their complete lack of even some Eman. If the verse had simply stated “وَمَا هُم ِمُؤۡمِنِينَ,” it might imply that there is some Eman in them. Moreover, Allah did not repeat “billahi walyawmilakhirihi,” affirming they believe in absolutely nothing associated with Islam.

How does Hypocrisy take root in a person’s heart?

Dr. Buti Ashaheed (RA) explains to us that there are five diseases when cultivated in the heart give birth to hypocrisy, when all 5 of these diseases are present in the same kafir heart, a hypocrite is born:

  • Hasad (Envy)
  • Hiqd (Malice or a deep seated hatred)
  • Dhagheenah (feeling of bitterness or resentment)
  • Love of the Dunya (World)
  • The Need to Accumulate Wealth by Any Means

Now we can understand when the prophet said that the qualities of a munafiq are three even if he fasts and prays and claims to be a Muslim:

“when he speaks, he lies, when he gives a promise he breaks it, and when he is trusted he betrays.” (‏متفق عليه)– because the purpose of his existence is premised upon layers of hatred for the Muslim, he hates that the Muslim, his modesty, that he enjoys peace and security, the he has the Shariah.  He will lie to the Muslim in order to gain his confidence. He will promise you the dunya and should he be given a position of trust then he will wait until the opportune time to betray the Muslim. This person may think they are deceiving the believers into believing they are righteous, as stated in the Qur’an:

“We are only doers of good.” (2:11) This is the logic of arrogance. Allah counters this by saying:

“Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not.” (2:12) Allah confirms that they are indeed corrupters, but they are oblivious to the consequences of their actions. They believe their deception remains hidden, yet Allah has revealed their true nature to the believers.

The Hypocrite’s Influence on Society:

The hypocrite’s presence is found in every age and time. They invest in “fitan,” generating discord and animosity among people. Their connections with disbelievers and access to Muslims enable them to spread corruption. They inform on the conditions of Muslims, incite conflict among Muslims, and kindle hatred in the hearts of disbelievers against Muslims, genocide, ethnic cleansing, the denomination of an individual or a group over others or over Mankind, and widespread moral decay. These are just a few of the many types of fasad they practice.  The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) has informed us:

“A Muslim is one from whose tongue and hands other Muslims are safe.” The hypocrite, however, sows the seeds of corruption in society. They claim to be doers of good, yet their actions are filled with arrogance and deceit.

Let us take the example of Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salool:

He is a prominent example of hypocrisy. Before Islam, he was a leader among the tribes of Aws and Khazraj in Medina, with aspirations to become the king of Medina. Despite outwardly professing Islam, his actions and intentions were contrary to its teachings. During the Battle of Uhud, he withdrew with a third of the army, causing harm and demoralization among the Muslims. Allah addressed this incident in Surah Ali-Imran. Abdullah ibn Ubayy also played a crucial role in spreading false accusations against Aisha (RA), causing immense distress to the Prophet’s household. Of course, Allah exonerated our mother, Aisha (RA) and condemned the hypocrites in Surah An-Nur, by stating the following:

“Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather, it is good for you. For every person among them has what he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof – for him is a great punishment.” (24:11) this verse clearly illustrates to us the real danger posed by the hypocrite because even believers were ensnared in the incident of the false accusation.

When Abdullah ibn Ubayy died, the Prophet (ﷺ) showed immense compassion and forgiveness by leading his funeral prayer. However, Allah revealed in Surah At-Tawbah:

“And do not pray over any of them who has died – ever – or stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient.” (9:84)

This emphasizes the severity of hypocrisy, its consequences in the Hereafter and why they are in the lowest levels of Jahannam.

Lessons from Hypocrisy:

Ya IbadAllah, Hypocrites may appear pleasing and invoke Allah to validate their intentions, but they are, in reality, the fiercest opponents causing widespread harm. As stated in Surah Al-Baqarah:

“And among the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly affairs, and he calls Allah to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.” Do not be fooled by their wealth and status. The Muslim and the Hypocrite are as different from each other as day is to night. The hypocrite has never had an atom’s worth of Eman in his heart. From this we can conclude that even a Muslim with just an atom’s worth of Eman in his heart is leagues above the hypocrite whose heart has decayed to such a state that he has become more dangerous than a wild animal.

The divine discourse is against fasad, which is usually translated as corruption. The significance of this is that the first thing the hypocrites are asked not to do, is to cause fasad, or corruption because now we can see that the only purpose of a Munafiq, in his current state the only course of action for a hypocrite, is corruption. Because they stand diametrically opposed to the believer is everything. And of course, Allah does not love those who do this because, as we will discover, insha-Allah, in the khutbah’s to come.  The intention of our deen is to distance humanity from fasad and its consequences, and to restore the natural state of order. The hypocrite through his blind hatred turns the prosperity of this earth into hardship by contributing towards the mass abandonment of the divine guarantees placed in our hands.

Allah’s laws are meant to preserve the land on which we live. They are the maintenance He established for our livelihood and sustenance. Turning away from these laws means tampering with the foundations of prosperity. Whether it affects the environment, human relationships, or society, everything depends on adhering to these principles.

Allah prepared for us a comfortable life with all the elements for happiness, prosperity, and benefit. He established a system for maintaining uprightness and avoiding corruption. This divine guidance encompasses the reality of this universe, our connection with it, and our destiny in it.

May Allah (SWT) guide us, protect us from the scourge of hypocrisy and the destructiveness of fasad, and make us among the righteous. Ameen.
