” I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me” (Adh-Dhariat: 56) Worship is a right due to Allah alone, and He has mandated it for humankind and jinn kind because it is the primary purpose of their creation. These acts of worship are an honour granted by Allah to His servants, elevating their status in this life and purifying them for the Next. We have been commanded to choose to perform acts such as salah, fasting, zakat, and Hajj in order to curb our inclinations and tame our baseness not to impose difficult upon us.

“Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favour upon you that you may be grateful.” (Al-Ma’idah: 6) Ya IbadAllah:

In the coming days, we will welcome موسمًا من مواسم الخير a season from amongst the seasons of goodness, obedience, and worship of Allah. We will welcome the days of Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam. Some people have been blessed by Allah to fulfill this noble obligation, a precious duty that is performed only in this specific time of the year. The Muslim who is granted success by Allah prepares eagerly and joyfully for this obligation, knowing that it can only be performed during this designated time.

Hajj is during sacred months (meaning that it’s not that haj is done on multiple months rather it is done at a very particular time, but the journey begins way before that) then whoever mandates Hajj upon himself [by entering the state of ihram], there is no lewdness, no wicked conduct and no disputing during Haj (in other words control your desires, your conduct and your tongue). And whatever good you do – Allah knows it. And take provisions (In the pre-Islamic Age of Ignorance, it was believed that carrying provisions for the Pilgrimage was worldly and impious. Pilgrims were expected to go to the Ka’bah without any supplies, as a sign of piety. This misconception is corrected by emphasizing that true righteousness lies not in abstaining but rather in obeying His commands. If a pilgrim acts wickedly, not carrying provisions won’t help him; his misconduct will disgrace him. Conversely, if a person has Taqwa of Allah and behaves morally, he will be honoured by Allah and respected by others, regardless of his provisions.) but the best provision is Taqwa of Allah. Have Taqwa of Allah, O you of understanding.

Hajj is only performed in the sacred precincts of the first house of worship appointed for mankind. A place honoured and venerated by Allah, the angels, and all the prophets and messengers. It is said that the Muslims and the Jews boasted about their places of worship. The Jews claimed that Jerusalem was superior because it was the place of migration for the prophets, while the Muslims claimed that the Ka’aba was superior because it was the first House established on earth. Then Allah revealed:

“Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Bakkah – (“Bakkah” is another name for Makkah. In Arabic, the letters “B” and “M” are sometimes used interchangeably. For instance, “lāzim” (necessary) can be “lāzib,”. “Makkah” usually refers to the entire city, while “Bakkah” specifically refers to the area around the Ka’aba. The name “Bakkah” means it crushes the necks of tyrants, implying that it subdues them. No tyrant who intended harm against it was ever successful, as Allah always destroyed them.)

“mubārakan” describes the state of the House when it was established, meaning it was established as a place of blessing and after it, Bayt al-Maqdis was built with forty years between them. It is said that Adam ﷺ built them both, and then Ibrahim ﷺ renovated the first House. It is blessed because the good deeds performed there are multiplied a hundred thousand times.

The phrase “مُبَارَكًا وَهُدًى لِّلْعَالَمِينَ” encapsulates the dual role of the Ka’aba as both a blessed sanctuary and a source of guidance for successive generations. Its blessings are manifested in the multiplied rewards it offers, while its guidance is evident in its role as the Qibla, it is the capital of our ummah and a testament to the continuity of monotheistic worship and the enduring legacy of the prophets.

“In it are clear signs, like the stone of Maqam Ibrahim, which elevated with him as he raised the Ka’aba’s foundation, leaving marks as if in clay. Other signs include birds not flying over it, the destruction of the people of the elephant, the repulsion of tyrants, the springing of Zamzam by Jibril, and its rediscovery by Abdul Muttalib, the pelting of the jamaraat, the hadith indicates that the pebbles of accepted Haj are lifted, explaining why the city isn’t buried in pebbles despite centuries of practice. Whoever enters it is safe from punishment.

“My Lord, make this city/land secure.” This duah is so powerful that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever dies in one of the two sanctuaries, Allah will raise him among the secure ones.”

Allah has made Hajj mandatory for those who can afford the journey, whether walking or riding or flying, with sufficient provision and security. Neglecting or denying Hajj, as some Jews and Christians have done, means that Allah is free from their need. This abandonment is equated to disbelief, emphasizing its seriousness, as in “Whoever abandons the Salah has committed disbelief.” When the verse was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ addressed the leaders of various religious communities, saying: “Allah has ordained Hajj upon you, so perform Hajj.” One community accepted, while five others rejected it. Then the verse was revealed:

Whoever disbelieves, Allah is free of need of the successive generations of the worlds.”

May Allah grant us the ability to perform Hajj, accept our efforts, and shower us with His mercy and forgiveness. Ameen.

Haj comes from the word hajja which means to defeat with arguments or evidence, therefore Haj is a hujja, an argument for or against you. It is mandated upon you if you have the financial and physical means to undertake the journey. Therefore, do not delay. Hajj is one of the best deeds in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ was once asked:

“What is the best deed? He said: ‘Eman in Allah and His Messenger.’ He was asked: ‘Then what?’ He said: ‘Jihad in the way of Allah.’ He was asked: ‘Then what?’ He said: ‘A righteous Hajj.'” (Bukhari). The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not utter any obscenity or commit any sin, will return like the day his mother gave birth to him.” (Bukhari). In other words, pure! Hajj is also a protection from poverty and from that which veil us from connecting to our Most Loving Lord:

“Follow up Hajj with Umrah, for they remove poverty and sins as fire/bellows removes impurities from iron, gold, and silver. The reward for an accepted Hajj is nothing less than Jannah.” (Tirmidhi)

Hajj is the ultimate reminder of the Day of Judgment. Clothed in the garments of our eventual burial, we stand alongside millions in absolute submission before Allah. Unlike the Day of Judgment, where submission will be inevitable, Hajj offers us the opportunity to choose to surrender our limbs and hearts willingly to the Lord of All. This sacred Haj mirrors the final gathering, yet it allows us the grace to embrace humility and devotion of our own free will.

“The pilgrims and those performing Umrah are the guests of Allah. If they call upon Him, He responds to them, and if they seek His forgiveness, He forgives them.” (Ibn Majah)

Hajj is a unique act of worship that carries immense significance. It is a journey that transforms the heart, strengthens the soul, and brings us closer to our Merciful Lord. Let us strive to fulfill this obligation if we are able and let us support and encourage those who are preparing to embark on this sacred journey.

O Allah, O Most Merciful, O Owner of Sovereignty, O Possessor of Majesty, make us among those who perform Hajj to Your Sacred House. Accept our Hajj and our deeds and forgive us. O Allah, make our Hajj a means to free us from the Fire and grant us great reward in this life and the Hereafter. O Allah, grant us a good end and steadfast hearts in Your obedience.
