We live in a crazy world, a world where everything is topsy turvy and nothing is quite as it seems – a world in many ways similar to that of Musa and Pharaoh. A world where what is false is taken to be true and what is true is taken to be false and without substance. Belief is mocked and unbelief lauded and championed, value given to insubstantial numbers on a screen, while real metal hard currency is given almost no consideration, and words of truth ignored in favour of eloquently spoken words of falsehood as we have seen recently in the British parliament’s vote to bomb Syria. The Messenger of Allah said, as part of a larger hadith,
“There will come a time of deceitful days, when the words of liars are taken as true and the words of the truthful are taken as lies.” And that is because we have been programmed and bewitched – our whole education and the ways in which information is disseminated in this modern age is geared towards making us compliant citizens who may have opinions on all manner of topics but never question the status quo. The magicians/ the spin merchants of this age have done their job. Allah says,
the translation of which is, “When they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people and filled them with fear. They brought forth an immense magic.” But the problem is that the current status quo is not acceptable – it celebrates and rewards all the worst aspects of being human – greed, arrogance, falsehood, exploitation and leaves no place for the best to find expression. And the worst part is that all of that is accompanied by self-delusion. Many of those who are involved think they are doing right by the world and that their actions bring benefit, while all the while they bring great harm. Allah says,
the translation of which is, “When they are told, ’Do not spread corruption on the earth’, they say, ‘We are simply setting things right.’ No indeed, it is they who are the spreaders of corruption, but they do not know it.” This is the claim of every government, every revolution. They all justify their actions and their policies upon this. Our mandate is to right the harm caused by the previous incumbents. Trust us, we know best. The current bombing campaign of Syria has been launched on that basis. But they do not know best and they do not learn from their mistakes. The rhetoric of Cameron is identical to that of Blair a decade ago and his justifications equally as spurious. And we all know the results of that previous campaign. In fact, there are strong grounds for suggesting that the existence of ISIS can be directly attributed to that botched campaign. It was and continues to be an unmitigated disaster. Allah says,
the translation of which is, “Say, ’Shall we inform you of the biggest losers when it comes to their actions – it is those who despite their efforts in this world being misguided, think that they are doing good.’” They are the greatest losers in this life and the Next, because they completely lack furqan. They have no capacity to distinguish right from wrong. They act according to whim, not knowledge, for as we know all knowledge comes from Allah, and their connection to Him is severed by their rejection of His Messengers. They are unbelievers, they are mufsidin, and so all their efforts will come to naught. They will not achieve their aims in this world or the Next – all they will bring about is disaster and chaos. The proof of this is in Allah’s Words, for He says,
the translation of which is, “Musa said, ‘What you have brought forth is but magic and illusion. Allah will expose it. Allah does not give success to the actions of those who spread corruption.” But we also know it from experience – the financial crashes that have resulted from the meddling in the economies, and the continuing repercussions from the failed campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Never once have their actions made things better, so why do we as Muslims keep on putting our trust in them and turning to them for help. Yes, the situation in Syria and Iraq is terrible, yes, ISIS are spreading their own version of ifsad over the earth, but ifsad never removed ifsad, only islah. And there can be no islah from a people who reject their Lord, a people who habitually denigrate Islam and the Muslims. Allah says,
the translation of which is, “You who believe, do not take as friends and protectors those who take your deen as a game and target for ridicule, from among those who have been given the Book before you and the unbelievers.”And He says,
the translation of which is, “You who believe, do not take unbelievers as friends and protectors instead of believers. Do to you want to give Allah a clear proof against you?” Instead, turn to your Lord and trust in Him. He does not look to your power, wealth or force of arms. He looks to your heart, and if He finds it healthy and full of light, He grants you His support and aid. He takes you in hand, and once He takes you in hand, no force can stand in the way of your success. The people of Musa were powerless in the face of the armies of Pharaoh, but who was successful and who was destroyed? We must take our stand against fasad, whatever its form. Then and only then will we and the societies in which we live be successful. Allah says,
the translation of which is, “Your Lord would never destroy towns unjustly when the inhabitants of those towns were people who put things right.”
We have mentioned in the first khutba that it is incumbent upon us as Muslims to take a stand against ifsad wherever we see it, but how do we know ifsad when we see it? What are its signs? How do we recognise the mufsidin and thus steer clear of them and their ways? Guidance, as ever, is provided to us by our Lord in His Book.
The first is active kufr. And by that I mean those who publicly proclaim their rejection of Islam and try and stand in its way wherever they find it. Allah says,
the translation of which is, “Those who disbelieve and block [people] from the Way of Allah, We will increase them with a punishment above their punishment for the way they used to spread corruption.” Such people are a common part of the establishment and even governments in many parts of the world today. Some of the most clear cut examples are found in the statements of certain American presidential candidates and certain well-known media outlets.
The second is israf – wastefulness, a hallmark of modern democratic societies with their bloated bureaucracies, and food and waste mountains resulting from massive overproduction. And that is to say nothing of their massive overuse of ordinance in warlike situations. Allah says,
the translation of which is, “Do not obey the commands of those who waste, those who spread corruption on the earth and do not make things right.”
The third is killing without true justification – spilling the blood of innocents. This a hallmark of those who would launch bombing campaigns on enemies in civilian settings where others are sure to get caught up in the crossfire, but is also a hallmark of khariji groups like ISIS and Boko Haram who think nothing of human life. When Allah told the angels He was going to put mankind upon the earth, they said,
the translation of which is, “Will You place on it one who will spread corruption and spill much blood,” indicating that ifsad and the spilling of blood are inextricably linked. This has always been one of the greatest signs of those who are mufsid – one need only look at the blood letting that heralded the French and Russian revolutions, or the amount of killing done in the name of certain countries . And hand in hand with this, is sabre-rattling, trying to persuade others to go to war, something we have seen a great deal of in recent times. Allah says,
the translation of which is, “Every time, they light the fires of War”, Allah puts them out and they go about the earth spreading corruption.”
The fourth is engaging in underhand business practices, something which has become synonymous with modern society as one banking scandal follows on after another.
The fifth is the erosion of family ties, and meaningful social interaction. Allah says,
the translation of which is, “It may be that if you turn away, you will spread corruption on the earth and cut off your ties of kinship.”
And the sixth is thievery and robbery. This exists on an almost unprecedented scale in the modern era where even those who are meant to be representing the best interests of the people, the governments, take away that self-same people’s wealth from them without right in the form of insidious taxes such as VAT and inheritance tax. Allah says,
the translation of which is, “They said, ‘By Allah, you know that we have not come to spread corruption on the earth. We are not thieves.’” These are but some of the most obvious signs and indicators of ifsad. And no group that engages in them as a matter of course can ever be expected to bring about islah. So we must stop turning to them. And instead first try to make things right amongst ourselves. We start with ourselves and then move on to our societies, and if we ever see two bodies of Muslims in conflict, it is we who must be the ones to set them right. That is the way of the believers. Allah says,
the translation of which is, “The believers are brothers, so make things right between your brothers.” We ask our Lord to give us the discrimination to tell ifsad and islah apart, and the strength to combat ifsad wherever we see it. We ask Him to protect us from the ifsad of this age and bring our communities back to the Sirat al-Mustaqim. We ask Him to protect the Muslims in these trying times and makes the plots of His enemies come to naught, whether they be those who claim to represent us or those who openly stand against us. We ask for clarity, and success in this life and the Next.
