الحمد لله، الحمد لله الذي أنعم على الإنسان وجعل أحسن نعمه الإسلام، نحمده تعالى ونستعينه، ونشكره تعالى ونستغفره ونستغيثه، نعوذ بالله من شرور أنفسنا ومن سيئات أعمالنا، من يهد الله فهو المهتد ومن يضلل فلن تجد له وليا مرشدا، ونشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له، له الملك و له الحمد، يحيي ويميت، بيده الخير، وهو على كل شيء قدير، ونشهد أن سيدنا و مولانا محمداً عبده ورسوله، وحبيبه وصفيه، بلغ الرسالة وأدى الأمانة ونصح الأمة، النبي الأمي الذي أرسله الله بالهدى والدين الحق، بشيرا ونذيرا بين يدي الساعة، صلى الله عليه وسلم وعلى آله وأصحابه ومن تبعهم بإحسان إلى يوم الدين.
أما بعد! فيا عباد الله اتقوا الله حق تقاته ولا تموتن إلا وأنتم مسلمون. يأيها الذين ءامنوا اتقوا الله وقولوا قولا سديدا يصلح لكم أعمالكم ويغفر لكم ذنوبكم. ومن يطع الله ورسوله فقد فاز فوزا عظيما. اتقوا الله فيما أمر وانتهوا عما نها عنه وزجر. قال الله عز وجل في كتابه الكريم إِنَّ الدِّينَ عِندَ اللهِ الاِسلاَمُ
Allah says in His Noble Book, the translation of which is, “The only deen with Allah is Islam.” We have talked about what Islam is not, about the extremes that often go beyond and outside of it, but we have yet to truly delineate what it is, this fantastic and blessed middle way that gives substance and meaning to our lives and keeps us free, safe and alive in this age of mass enslavement, fitna and deadened hearts and souls. This deen is an unparalleled gift, a treasure more valuable than all the riches of the world. If people truly understood what it is, they would leave everything behind, their comfortable homes, their status, even their lives and family in order to have even the smallest taste of it. And yet we have been guided to it – it has been placed in our laps. We have it, if we only but knew what we have. It is extraordinary, and it has the potential to be more extraordinary still when we restore the rest of it that has fallen by the wayside
We live in troubled times, a topsy-turvy age, an age where everything is inverted and peoples’ trust placed in all the wrong things – the age of Ruwaybida. The Prophet said,
سَيَأْتِي عَلَى النَّاسِ سَنَوَاتٌ خَدَّاعَاتُ، يُصَدَّقُ فِيهَا الْكَاذِبُ، وَيُكَذَّبُ فِيهَا الصَّادِقُ، وَيُؤْتَمَنُ فِيهَا الْخَائِنُ، وَيُخَوَّنُ فِيهَا الأَمِينُ، وَيَنْطِقُ فِيهَا الرُّوَيْبِضَةُ. قِيلَ: وَمَا الرُّوَيْبِضَةُ؟ قَالَ: الرَّجُلُ التَّافِهُ فِي أَمْرِ الْعَامَّةِ
“There will come a time of great deceit when the words of liars will be believed and the words of the truthful will be rejected, a time when the faithless will be trusted and the faithful will be deemed untrustworthy, a time when the Ruwaybida will speak forth.” “What are the Ruwaybida?” they asked. He replied, “Insignificant little men holding command over the masses.” That is the reality of the world in which we live. And yet that reality does not and need not apply to us, the people of Islam. While the rest of mankind flounder in darkness and wander around lost, we have been granted access to the safe haven of the deen. At a time when the khilafa is gone and the milla of kufr is dominant, we maintain our belief in Allah and His Messenger. We are those strangers to whom the Messenger of Allah referred when he said,
إن الإسلام بدأ غريباً وسيعود غريباً كما بدأ فطوبى للغرباء
“Islam began as something strange and will once again become something strange just like when it began. So glad tidings to the strangers!” We are those strangers who love the Messenger of Allah despite never seeing him, our every pore yearning to be with him,
قال الرسول ﷺ أشد أمتي لي حباً يكونون بعدي، يود أحدهم لو رآني بأهله وماله
The Messenger said, “Those in my umma with the strongest love for me are the people who will come after me. Some of them would give their family and wealth to have seen me.” Alhamdulillah, we are a part of his umma, an umma that Allah describes as being the best ever to be brought forth in the history of mankind. He says,
كُنْتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ
the translation of which is: “You are the best community ever to be produced before mankind. You enjoin the right, forbid the wrong and believe in Allah.” So extraordinary is this umma of which we are part that even the Prophets of previous nations wished they could have been part of it. Out of the billions of people who walk and have walked this earth, it is we who have been singled out and honoured. It is we who have been granted the only blessing that is described as being complete and perfected, the only blessing that suffices on its own. Allah says,
الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي
the translation of which is: “Today I have perfected your deen for you and completed My blessing upon you.” And as we say in our wirds and duas,
الحمد لله على نعمة الإسلام وكفى بها نعمة
“Praise be to Allah for the blessing of Islam, it is enough of a blessing.”
We have community and togetherness, true company and brotherhood, in a time of the utmost loneliness, isolation and alienation, for our connection to one another is based on the Haqq, the Real, not something transitory and impermanent. It is He, subhanah, who joins our hearts together, something no amount of money or worldly influence could ever accomplish. Allah says,
وَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ لَوْ أَنْفَقْتَ مَا فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا مَا أَلَّفْتَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ أَلَّفَ بَيْنَهُمْ
the translation of which is, “And He unified their hearts. Even if you had spent everything on the earth, you could not have unified their hearts. But Allah has unified them.” In these times when even families can no longer bear to look after their own, with children sending their elderly parents to soulless homes, when companies view people as resources and numbers, and next-door neighbours can remain total strangers to one other, it is only Islam that keeps this essential part of the human condition alive. In a BBC documentary aired a few years ago called Make Bradford British, a non-Muslim man spent some time living with a Muslim. And instead of finding the expected terrorism, the thing that struck him and attracted him the most was the strong sense of family and community, something that he recognised as being lost in his own life and being part of the values of his grandparent’s age.
إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ
“The believers are brothers,” And we will continue to be brothers in the truest and deepest sense of the word so long as we continue to affirm Allah and His Messenger.
We have sanity and intellect in a time of madness and heightened stupidity, a time when the laws of all the lands are made by people whom Allah describes as totally lacking in all aspects of thought and perception. He says,
صُمٌّ بُكْمٌ عُمْيٌ فَهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ
the translation of which is, “Deaf, dumb and blind, they have no intellect.” The goal of the intellect is to distinguish right from wrong, what is real from what is false. And when the intellect goes wrong, it inverts this and turns it upside down – it starts to view what is wrong as being right.
يَامُرُونَ بِالْمُنكَرِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمَعْرُوفِ
“Commanding the wrong and forbidding the right,” as Allah describes the hypocrites and their ilk. And what is real as being false, much like the people of Pharaoh in previous times who were bewitched by the sorcerers of their age. Everything becomes inverted: No longer are we the created but we are the creators. Illusory becomes reality and reality is deemed illusory, faith is placed in a valueless monetary system, while belief in a Creator is deemed backward and unenlightened and the teachings of the Quran dismissed as asatir al-awalin – fables of the first peoples). People no longer have intellect because they have lost contact with what the intellect actually is. The Imam of the mosque of Shaykh Muhammad ibn al-Habib in Meknes, Muhammad ibn AbdalWahhab, used to say,
“People think the intellect is what enables us to make the calculations to build a rocket and send a man to the moon. It is not. The real intellect is what makes a man come in to the mosque and pray two rakats,” That connection to the real tethers us and protects us from the consequences suffered by those who do not know how to use their intellect correctly – the constant despair and emptiness, and resulting depression, only alleviated by alcohol-induced stupour. In this modern, progressive society, there is an extraordinarily high incidence of suicide and mental illness, against which the Muslim umma is largely insulated.
We are only ones who truly remember what it means to be human, to be real men and women. Everyone else has buried away their true reality and identity. They think that the natural form of the human being is to give free rein to his appetites, whereas we know that our fitra is to worship Allah. Allah says,
فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفًا فِطْرَةَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا
the translation of which is, “So set your face firmly towards the Deen, as a pure natural believer, Allah’s natural pattern on which He made mankind.” We remember the covenant we made with our Lord before any one of us ever set foot on this earth, when He gathered us all before Him and asked us, alastu birabbikum. And we all replied, balaa. We remember the amana with which we have been entrusted and we remember our Lord. And it is that remembrance that gives us ease and tranquillity in these times of terror and anxiety. Allah says,
أَلاَ بِذِكْرِ اللهِ تَطْمَئِنَّ الْقُلُوبُ
the translation of which is, “It is only with the remembrance of Allah that hearts are made tranquil.” And when we remember Him, He remembers us and gives us support. For, as Muslims we have an ally for whom nothing is impossible, one who is All-Powerful and is with us in every moment. One whose support is unwavering for those who believe in Him, and does not disappear when the going gets tough. Inna-llaha ma’a-l-muminin. Allah is with the believers, and He has promised us victory and success. Allah says,
وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا مِنْكُمْ وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ لَيَسْتَخْلِفَنَّهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ كَمَا اسْتَخْلَفَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ وَلَيُمَكِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ دِينَهُمُ الَّذِي ارْتَضَى لَهُمْ وَلَيُبَدِّلَنَّهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ خَوْفِهِمْ أَمْنًا
the translation of which is, “Allah has promised those of you who believe and do right actions that He will make them successors in the land as He made those before them successors and will firmly establish for them their deen with which He is pleased and give them, in place of their fear, security.”
أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولك ولسائر المسلمين من كل ذنب فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرَّحيم.
الحمد لله الحمد لله رب العالمين، وأشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له وأشهد أن محمداً عبده ورسوله، صلى الله وسلم وبارك عليه وعلى آله وصحبه، والتابعين وتابعي التابعين ومن تبعهم بإحسان إلى يوم الدين. أما بعد! فيأيها الذين ءامنوا اتقوا الله ما استطعتم واسمعوا وأطيعوا وأنفقوا خيرا لأنفسكم. يا عباد الله أوصيكم وإياي بتقوى الله وطاعته وأحذركم وإياي عن معصيته ومخالفته قال الله تعالى في كتابه العزيز: ادْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
Allah say is His Mighty Book, Enter the Garden for what you have done.” We have talked in the first khutba about the wondrous gift Allah has given each and every one of us, the gift of Islam. But that does not mean that we can now rest on our laurels – we must not think that we have arrived and thus be content with the status quo. When the Messenger of Allah was in Makka, he was Muslim and had received guidance from his Lord, but he was not content to accept the offer of Quraysh and remain there, compromised and disempowered and integrated into the social norms of the day. He was not prepared to accept anything less than the full deen of Allah and certainly not prepared to accept or overlook the idolatry and indulgences of Quraysh. He and his Companions actively loved with the love of Allah and actively hated with the hate of Allah. The corruption he saw before him distressed him and he wanted it brought to an end. And in just a matter of a few short years, he and his Companions had succeeded in their aims and brought about the just society of al-Madinat al-Munawarra.We cannot accept kufr at any level, for it is disobedience to Allah and corruption on the earth. And that is truly hateful to anyone with a rightly-guided heart. Allah says,
وَكَرَّهَ إِلَيْكُمُ الْكُفْرَ وَالْفُسُوقَ وَالْعِصْيَانَ أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الرَّاشِدُونَ
the translation of which is, “And He has made unbelief, deviance and disobedience hateful to you. People such as these are rightly guided.” It is a denigration and abuse of the Commands and Prohibitions of the One that we love, and we might as well be dead if that does not bother us. When Hudhayfah was asked to describe someone who was living and yet dead, he replied,
الذي لا ينكر المنكر بيده ولا بلسانه ولا بقلبه
“The one who does not forbid a wrong with either his hand, tongue or heart.”
For our own health and well-being and the health and well-being of the societies in which we live, we cannot accept less than the full deen of Allah. We can no longer simply remain content with parts of it, even if those parts far outstrip what anybody else has. Allah says,
يَأَيُّهَا الذِينَ آمَنُواْ ادْخُلُواْ فِي السَّلْمِ كَافَّةً
the translation of which is, “O you who believe, enter into as-salm completely.” As-salm is interpreted as meaning Islam by many of the mufassirin. That means the deen of Madinah and not that of Makka, a deen that combines ibada and muamala; a deen that impacts on every aspect of our lives – our homes, our streets, our leadership and our workplaces not just our mosques, madrasas and zawiyas; a deen that defines how we trade and not just how we pray; a deen that empowers us and our communities and does not just ghettoise us and isolate us from wider society. This means the restoration of zakat and ridding our transactions of usury, this means the restoration of justice and a return to the laws of Allah, not the laws of people. This means the full revitalisation and reestablishment of the Sunna. This must be the goal and task of every Muslim alive today. We must be with the people who know and the people who do. The people of understanding and action, they must be our companions.
We thank Allah for the gift of Islam and for placing us among the ranks of the Muslims. And we ask Him to give us the success and capacity to put His deen fully into practice in this time and in this place. We ask Allah to once again make us the best of nations by restoring our leaders, and enabling us to command the right and forbid the wrong. And we ask Him to make us love with His love and hate with His hate, and only ever be pleased with that with which He is pleased.
إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ، يَا أَيُهَا الذِينَ آمَنُواْ صَلُّواْ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُواْ تَسْلِيماً.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ أَجْمَعِينَ. وَارْضَ اللَّهُمَّ عَنِ الْخُلَفَاءِ الرَّاشِدِينَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ وَعَلِيٍّ، وعن أم المومنين عائشة التي أمرنا الله في سورة النور أن ندافع عنها، وَعَنْ سَائِرِ الصَّحَابَةِ أَجْمَعِينَ، خُصُوصاً اِلأَنْصَارَ مِنْهُمْ وَالمُهَاجِرِينَ، وَعَنِ التَّابِعِينَ وَتَابِعِي التَّابِعِينَ وَمَنْ تَبِعَهُمْ بِإِحْسَانٍ إِلَى يَوْمِ الدِّينِ.
اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِ وُلَاةَ أُمُورِ المُسْلِمِينَ لِمَا يُرْضِيكَ وَلِاتِّبَاعِ سُنَّةِ نَبِيِّكَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَهُمْ عَلَى الصِّرَاطِ المُسْتَقِيمِ، وَأَصْلِحْهُمْ يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ.
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى شَيْخِنَا، وَعَلَى أَمِيرِنَا، وَعَلَى جَمِيعِ أُمَرَاءِ وَزُعَمَاءِ المُسْلِمِينَ.
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى المُسْلِمِينَ فِي هَذِهِ المَدِينَةِ، وَوَفِّقْهُمْ لِمَا تُحِبُّهُ وَتَرْضَاهُ يَا أَكْرَمَ الأَكْرَمِينَ.
اللَّهُمَّ أَعِزَّ الإِسْلَامَ وَالمُسِْلمِينَ، وَاخْذُلِ الْكُفْرَ وَالْكَافِرِينَ، وَانْصُرِ المُجَاهِدِينَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ. وَاجْعَلْ كَلِمََتَكَ هِيَ العُلْيَا وَكَلِمَةَ الْكُفْرِ هِيَ السُّفْلَى. رَبَّنَا ءَاتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقَِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ. إِنَّ اللهَ يَامُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالإِحْسَانِ وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَى، وَيَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالمُنكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ، يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَّكَّرُونَ، وَلَذِكْرُ اللهِ أَكْبَرُ وَاللهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ. وَقُومُواْ إِلَى صَلاتِكُمْ يَرْحَمُكُمُ اللهُ.
